| PETITION ON BEHALF OF MR. SUJITNO SAJUTI
Sujitno Sajuti, a 63-year-old West Hartford resident and advocate for immigrant rights, was taken into custody by three federal ICE agents outside of his home early on Saturday morning, December 10, 2011. Mr. Sajuti was on his way to tutor students in math and religion in a nearby town when he was detained. He is now being held at the Bristol County Jail in North Dartmouth, MA. Sujitno was singled out for detention and imprisonment due to hasty, harsh and discriminatory U.S. Government decisions and classifications that were implemented back in the post-9/11 atmosphere during 2002-2003. Like many thousands of fellow immigrants targeted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement arm (ICE) who are neither criminals nor terrorists, Mr. Sajuti has been a positive and peaceful presence here. Sujitno is a devoted husband and a good neighbor; he has served as a tutor in math, religious and language studies, participates in his mosque, and has been active in many campaigns for social justice. His civic engagement has included substantial volunteer commitments over the years with a number of community organizations on behalf of better health care for everyone, access to education, comprehensive immigration reform and interfaith understanding. Mr. Sajuti has lived in the U.S. for 30 years. Far from being a threat, Sujitno is a valued member of our – and his –community. Because ICE holds final discretion in this matter, we request that ICE officers and other federal officials with jurisdiction release Sujitno Sajuti and permit him to remain in the United States with his family and community. |
